While other designers are looking at muses or style icons. TIAN-u has looked to herself for inspiration. While every collection is bound to contain some DNA from the creative director, this collection feels like an interview with her. Not one for words, the idea of laying it out for us to see and interpret seems like the way to go.
Inspired by everything from the Spike Jones movie “Her,” to bright kids wear colors, to her own wardrobe, this collection may seem like a random assortment of references, but it all comes together to form the designer. You’ll see her love of colors come through in the way of bright green waterproof blazer, to her handmade ceramic buttons, or her transparent blue rain boots layered over other shoes. Mixed with them are mixed check shirts patchwork together to create an interesting mix of prints. There are also cut outs in the clothes that expose skin underneath.
Proportionately, the clothes fit a little awkwardly, as if Alice in wonderland had drank the wrong potion, but it all fits the designers personal taste. If the clothes seem to fit a little too tightly or the model seems a little big, it’s because the designer’s clothes fit a little too loose.
The inspiration for this collection may seem a bit all over the place, but with TIAN-U doing a self-portrait as her collection, it is able to contain a level of cohesiveness. It feels like you know somebody who you’d imagine these clothes would represent the inner workings of the mind of. You just forgot it was her.
