My name is Noah Delos Reyes, a Senior at FIT studying Sportswear design. I am currently attending the Politecnico di Milano School of Design in Italy. I was born in Saipan (a U.S commonwealth) and raised in the Philippines where I began to learn how to sew and draw. My work takes inspiration around historical periods, particularly the golden age of couture, a period after the 2nd world war that pushed the limits of creation through cut and fabrication. I was fortunate to have my work presented in the Fashion Design AAS Exhibition Graduating Student Collection for sculptural fashion and interned for the eponymous fashion house of Oscar De la Renta. I am very passionate about learning different techniques used by the different artisanal guilds that once ruled the fashion industry and believe in the protection of the heritage it exhumes for many generations to come.

The narrative of my graduate collection began as a vision of this muse. A muse not of this time but somewhere both from my heritage and my design sensibilities. I started to dwell from the era between the Spanish Colonization of Philippines to when the second world war began. The history was absolutely rich with literature, art, and craftsmanship. However, I was particularly intrigued by the story behind the women wearing the “Barot Saya” a typical Philippine ensemble that is a marriage of our westernization and our own tradition. The outfit is composed of a sheer bodice made out of a handwoven textile derived from pineapple fibers, a cotton undershirt or slip, an intricately embroidered handkerchief at the neck, and a long skirt with a sash. The style and cut of this ensemble was kept throughout the numerous regimes that ruled the country (Whether it be the American and Japanese regimes).
