MateriaLab® is a portuguese jewellery project and their pieces are created using new aesthetic values and shapes by discovering the potentiality of everyday life materials, industrial or recycled like stainless steel, PVC, carbon fibre, acrylic, rubbers or plastic.
In the creative process materials gain a different function from the one that it has on the daily life.
Materials are in the creative center, but also is their reinstatement, because they are used in a way that balances the roughness of their industrial nature with the softness of design.

Since its creation in 2009, MateriaLab® has been chosen to represent Portuguese design abroad in places like MoMA New York, MoMA Japan, and Talents 2010 in Frankfurt, Barcelona Museums, Royal Ballet of San Francisco, Chicago Museum, Modern Art Center Punta della Dogana in Italy, Art Gallery of Queensland and Gallery of Modern Art in Australia, selection for Centre Pompidou in Paris and Portuguese Museums …by now pieces are travelling from Lisbon to France, Belgium, Italy, Brasil, USA, Holland, Japan, Estonia, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Turkey, Republic of Kazakhstan …

Since 2010 MateriaLab® has been selected by Bijorhca in Paris, to be at the Cream booths which have a selection of 40 international designers with fresh and new proposals concerning new jewellery.

MateriaLab® was selected to be at the Grammy Awards Red Carpet Lounge 2012 to present a collection made especially for the event where pieces will become more conceptual and challenging.

Carla Matos studied Jewellery at “Contacto Directo School”, in Lisbon, and was through the author’s jewellery that she felt free to reinvent material functions, transpose concepts and defy the senses.

MateriaLab® is more than using materials in a new way.
It’s about making materials revive.
