Kristal Roberts is a recent BDes Honours fashion graduate from Massey University, Wellington. With a focus on sustainable and ethical design practices her graduate collection ‘Rethread’ is made entirely from second-hand denim. Kristal takes an artisanal upcycling approach creating one-of-a-kind pieces featuring minimal waste cutting techniques and heavy textile fraying.

100% upcycled second-hand denim.

Rethread challenges the low worth of discarded denim by transforming it beyond traditional utilitarian conventions into artisanal garments of dysfunctional beauty. I aim to deconstruct the glamour surrounding fashion to question the paradoxical conditions under which the industry seamlessly operates.

A contrast of the delicate chaos and clean durability. Chaos taking the form of rips, falling yarns and frayed denim fur sewn into jean silhouettes. Balanced with a more couture approach with unblemished denim featuring traditional denim top-stitching and clean detail.
