My Favourite Piece: EUPHEMIO FERNANDEZ

BUILDING A COLLECTION IS A VERY PERSONAL PROCESS FOR EACH AND EVERY DESIGNER—AND MANY ITEMS HAVE THEIR OWN STORY AND DEEPER MEANING. IN OUR NEW SERIES, MY FAVOURITE PIECE, WE ASK DESIGNERS ABOUT A PARTICULAR ITEM IN THEIR COLLECTION, AIMING TO SHED LIGHT ON THE CONNECTION BETWEEN DESIGNERS AND THE CLOTHING THEY CRAFT. Next up is EUPHEMIO FERNANDEZ

Why did you choose this piece?

This piece is the final look of my collection. It's a garment that closes the trilogy of collections that I started. Firstly with Manifiesto Spring Summer 2017 and then it continued with Los Odiosos 2017/2018. This look is formed with snippets of fabric from each of the previous collections.

What makes it stand out amongst the collection?

The snippets of fabric of all the collections are sewn one-to-one in the jacket and pant. It also took between 30-40 hours to complete the look, which makes it stand out even more.

Explain the origins of the design. What were your initial inspirations?

The original idea was to create one piece that was unique and almost too elaborate (with all snippets of fabric of all last collections). I wanted a single piece that would close the trilogy; one that was full of textures, volumes, and shapes. This piece also functioned as a family tribute.

Why did you choose the specific fabrics, patterns, colors?

The colors are aleatory—they are all used in the collections. The pattern that it's drawn from is a product of chance. I used may types of fabrics: corduroy, denim, canvas, print and reflector fabrics, among other things.

What is the story of this piece and how does it work to tell your collection's overall story?

This piece is the most important of collection. It's a tribute to the family, and the love of my grandparents. It's a union of love, textures, colors, shapes, history and artistic heritage.
