when elements are repeated or altered they have intervals in between or sometimes an overlap and this creates rhythm and a sense of movement.
So in interms of progressive rhythm each time you repeat a pattern a movement or a design it changes a little, it transforms and gradualy translates into a steady rhythm/cycle and then gradualy changes in to something different.
