Surgical Distortion’s’ is a study of corsetry with the aim of investigating the contradicting perception of the corset as an “instrument of torture”, while being symbolic of power, rebellion and female sexual empowerment. In a world increasingly dominated by media representations of the ideal self, with this series, I aimed to confront the viewer to challenge the “ideal” forms of beauty, actively constructed of contradicting elements of vulnerability vs. empowerment.
