Vodou is an ancient religion within the country of my ancestors, Haiti. The faith derives from a mix of traditional African and Roman Catholic religions centered around spirituality. Spirits are known as Loa, and through this collection, I explore the Loa known as Erzulie Freda. She is associated with femininity and fluidity. Her patronage, which consists of love, beauty, dance, and finer things, fascinated me. It all blends to build a sense of expression and femininity I see within myself.
The use of beading, floral appliques, hints of gold, the color pink, and chains were used to capture and embody the essence of Erzulie Freda in all her significance. This collection overall, allowed me to share parts of my culture and celebrate its spiritual aspects.
