Anna Alexander graduated from the MA Fashion Footwear course from the Royal College of Art. Her work focuses on intersections of the common and the sophisticated, making elegant versions of humble footwear staples such as the espadrille. Using materials, symbols and color combinations that in themselves are regarded as "cheap" and reworking them extensively, they transcend their origins and become something more refined.

LIFE'S A BEACH

Exploring intersections of the common and the refined. Looking at traditional espadrille-making, I developed my own rubberising technique to make the soles, using fisherman's knotting techniques for the heel structures and a color story inspired by the mismatched ice-cream vendor signs found in contemporary beach photography.
