The collection finds its inspiration in the captivating intelligence of humpback whales and the intricate patterns of their melodic songs. These majestic creatures, with their complex acoustic communication and remarkable migratory journeys spanning 68,500 kilometers, inspired the artist to craft this collection. Despite extensive efforts by scientists and acoustic biologists, the mystery of humpback whales' songs remains one of nature's undiscovered treasures.
The genesis of the collection stems from a profound experience during and after the artist's severe injury. Recurring dreams of oceans, sandy shores, and breaching whales during moments of unconsciousness and pain prompted a deep contemplation of these creatures, leading to a journey of mental clarity and physical healing. The artist was captivated by the whales' characteristics, vocalizations, and challenging migratory endeavors, feeling as though they had been invited to share in their journey.
Drawing on research by Dr. Fred Sharpe, a biologist at the Alaska Whale Foundation, highlighting the cognitive abilities of humpback whales, particularly their spindle neurons associated with language acquisition and social intelligence, the creative director designed a fabric pattern rich in concept and communicative essence. Collaborating with a sound engineer, the artist extracted the sound spectrum of humpback whale songs to inform the graphical shapes and forms of the pattern.
To complement the cubic and pixelated nature of the pattern, the creative director opted for the traditional weaving technique of ikat, ensuring authenticity and a handmade touch to the fabrics. TRAVELING to Yazd, Iran, renowned for its ikat craftsmanship, the designer collaborated with a master craftsman to bring the pattern to life.
The intricate process of ikat involves applying the designed pattern to bundles of yarn, dyeing the yarn, warping the threads, and meticulously weaving the fabric, all embellished with the essence of the humpback whale's song. The main material of the fabric is a blend of eco-friendly viscose.
